Part II: The Human Story Chapter 6

Israel & the Nations

The Universal Mission and Path for All Humanity

After the Tower of Babel, humanity split into seventy nations. Each received its portion and purpose. But one nation—descended from Abraham—was chosen for a unique mission: to be 'a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,' bringing knowledge of Hashem to the world. What does this mean for Jews? And what is the path for non-Jews?

The Division of Humanity

"They were divided into seventy nations... each one at a known level."

After the Tower of Babel, humanity dispersed into seventy root nations. Each received its land, language, and spiritual overseer—one of seventy celestial ministers. The world was organized into distinct peoples, each with its own character and purpose.

These nations represent humanity at its natural level after Adam's fall—capable of goodness, but without the special mission of carrying the Torah. They have their own path to spiritual accomplishment through the Noachide laws.

Abraham: A New Beginning

"Abraham elevated himself... to become the father of all converts."

From among all the nations, Abraham was chosen—not arbitrarily, but because he discovered the truth through his own efforts. Hashem made a covenant with him: his descendants would carry the Torah, and through them all nations would be blessed. As we learned in Chapter 5, Abraham became the elevated 'root' whose branches would form the Jewish nation.

Here is a crucial point: the gate to becoming part of this elevated root was not closed—it was passed to Abraham! Anyone from any nation who recognizes the truth can join his spiritual family by entering through Abraham's tree. Abraham became 'the father of converts.' The door remains open. Important: Judaism does not do proselytism—we do not believe the whole world needs to become Jewish, nor do we force anyone to convert, nor do we say that without conversion one cannot have Olam Haba (the World to Come). A Ben Noach should follow their own path, and by keeping the seven Noachide laws they merit the World to Come! However, if by their own free will they decide to convert, there is a process as we were instructed at Mount Sinai: study of Torah to know the basics, brit milah (circumcision), immersion in the mikveh, and acceptance of the Torah with all its mitzvot and Rabbinic decrees before a Beit Din (Orthodox Rabbinic court). After this, they become 100% Jewish. Their Hebrew name includes 'ben Avraham'—for example, 'Shimon ben Avraham' (Shimon son of Abraham). Israel is not only a race but a nation defined by covenant and mission—and you can choose to be part of it!

A Kingdom of Priests

"And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."

Israel's role is like that of priests among the nations—dedicated to divine service, responsible for maintaining the connection between Heaven and Earth. The 613 mitzvot are the tools of this priestly service.

This is a big responsibility. Israel's mission is to be a 'light unto the nations'—to demonstrate through their lives that Hashem exists, that His Torah is true, and that a life of meaning is possible. When Israel fulfills its mission, the whole world benefits.

The Path for All Humanity

"He gave them commandments through which they too would merit... these are the seven Noachide laws."

Non-Jews are not without purpose or path. The seven Noachide laws provide a complete framework for spiritual accomplishment: prohibitions against idolatry, blasphemy, murder, theft, sexual immorality, eating live animals, and the command to establish justice.

A non-Jew who keeps these laws because Hashem commanded them in the Torah is considered righteous and has a share in the World to Come. This is the authentic path for non-Jews—not conversion, but Noachide observance.

Joining Israel

"One can uproot himself from his roots and attach himself to Abraham."

Hashem left open the door for those who want to take on the full mission. A sincere convert who undergoes proper conversion becomes fully Jewish—a child of Abraham and Sarah. Ruth, King David's ancestor, was a convert.

Conversion is not encouraged lightly—it means taking on 613 commandments and joining a people with a difficult history. But for those who genuinely belong, the path is open.

One Humanity, One Purpose

Jews and non-Jews have different roles but the same ultimate purpose: to recognize Hashem and bring His presence into the world. Israel carries the Torah; the nations support and eventually join in the knowledge of Hashem. In the messianic era, 'Hashem will be King over all the earth; on that day Hashem will be One and His name One.'
